2021 Chittenden County high school girls soccer outlook

BURLINGTON

Coach: Jeff Hayes (15th season)

Last season: 4-5; lost to Essex in Division I playdowns

Key returnees: Sage Smith, forward, senior; Anna Diebold, midfield, senior; Anna Jenemann, defense, senior; Vivian Halladay, goalie, sophomore; Libby Westbrook, defense, senior; Brooks DeShaw, midfield/forward, sophomore; Rosalie Perkinson, midfield; sophomore; Lydia Sheeser, midfield, junior; Enya Arentzen, midfield, junior

Key newcomers: Too early to tell.

Outlook: The Seahorses are represented by youth and experience — just four seniors among the 14 returnees — as they strive to maintain their style of possession soccer. While Smith and DeShaw could be the Seahorses’ top attacking options, Hayes said he’s hoping others develop or break through to provide balance on offense. Jenemann will likely take set pieces, a job previously filled by all-state player Payton Karson, who graduated. Halladay, a spot starter a year ago due to injury, is now Burlington’s No. 1 goalie. “I have a great group and hopefully we can make a good run,” Hayes said. “I like the way the girls are working.”
